Helpful Hints To Prepare For Your Move
- Obtain information about the city to which you are moving. Knowing about where you are going will make it easier for you and your family to adjust to your new home.
- Eliminate items you don’t need. Go through all your rooms and discard or sell items you won’t need in your new home.
- Use up perishable items such as food, opened packaged goods, and household items you don’t want to take with you.
- Be sure to inform your moving consultant if there are certain items you won’t take or if you will be buying extra items.
- Make a personal inventory of your furniture and personal effects including their replacement value. This can be used for your transit insurance.
- Notify your landlord or housing agent of your departure date.
- The night before packing: Pack your suitcases and remove them, along with your valuables, other papers and tickets to a safe place. This will prevent them from being packed with the rest of your shipment.

- Eliminate items you don’t need. Go through all your rooms and discard or sell items you won’t need in your new home.
- Use up perishable items such as food, opened packaged goods, and household items you don’t want to take with you.
- Be sure to inform your moving consultant if there are certain items you won’t take or if you will be buying extra items.

Things To Do Before Your Move
- Telephone service? Gas and electricity service? Water service?
- Vehicle registration?
- The post office, for redirection of mail?
- Your bank(s), to transfer accounts?
- The taxation department?
- Your insurance company, for household, car, life, and health insurance?
- Your children’s school, and received a letter from them regarding your child’s status?
- Credit cards, charge accounts, monthly bills?
- Friends, relatives, and co-workers?
- Club memberships?
- Periodicals to which you subscribe?
- Your doctor and dentist, and obtained your personal records?
- Your solicitors?
- Defrosted your refrigerator/freezer?
- Disconnected your washing machine and drained the water?
- Prepared your washing machine for transit?
- Drained the fuel from heaters and lamps?
- Arranged for the gas company to disconnect any gas appliances? (We are not allowed to do this.)
- It is recommended to turn off your air-conditioners 12 hours before packing, and run your dehumidifiers. This will reduce the chance of mildew on your furniture.
- Removed all fixtures and fittings from the wall and ceilings?
- Arranged for someone to look after the children during the packing process?
- Washed thoroughly any items that may be subject to agricultural inspection? (Golf equipment, bicycles, plant pots, etc.)
- Advised us if you are including any valuable antiques, furs, or paintings in your shipment. For our mutual protection, and for insurance purposes, notice in writing is requested.
- (Please check with our handyman service. They offer a variety of services to assist you with your move.)
- Don’t put anything in drawers. Please check with your packing supervisor before you do this.
- Don’t ship perishable foods.
- Don’t polish your furniture immediately prior to your move.
- Don’t clean your carpets immediately prior to your move, give them time to dry out.
- Don’t store or transport jewelry, money, legal documents, taxation papers, insurance policies, or other documents or articles of extreme value. You should keep these items in your personal luggage.
- Don’t include DANGEROUS GOODS in your shipment. DANGEROUS GOODS are items such as, but not limited to: Ammunition, new or partially opened cans of paint, used paint brushes, linseed oil, bleach products, LPG cylinders, turpentine, kerosene, petrol, naphtha, cleaning fluids, oily rags, used polishing cloths, aerosols of any kind, vegetable oils, and chemical sets.
- Check that you have not left anything behind.
- Any clothes at the dry cleaners, shoes at the shoemaker, or clothes or sporting goods at your club or at school?
- Windows and doors all locked?
- Residence keys returned to the landlord/owner?
